Melissa’s Organic Food Review

Melissa’s Organic Food sent me another box full of their organic goodies to try!! Again I was pleasantly surprised with not only the contents but the quality of products that I received.  This time around I received several goodies that included the following list.

  • Lentils
  • Ready to use Crepes
  • Farro
  • Porchini
  • Wild Mushorooms–Morel
  • Pine Nuts
  • Red Quinoa
Lentils were in a box that was sealed and you can store them in the pantry or the refrigerator. I chose the refrigerator and I decided that I was going to try my hand a making a lentil soup.  I used onions, garlic, lentils, salt and pepper, celery, carrots and chicken broth. I just cooked it all together adding the lentils last and let it simmer for just over an hour.  The Lentil soup was surprisingly good, but not something that we would want very often.
Crepes were a surprise to me, because I have never made a crepe before. But when we opened the box Liz was so excited! She was jumping up and down and said, “Lindsay’s Mom makes these all of the time and they are fabulous!” I didn’t know she had ever had a Crepe, so I told her she was in charge of making them.  She did a fantastic job with the Crepes she made strawberry crepes and oh my goodness, they were so good.  Words can’t even describe how yummy they were and how proud that I was that she made such delicious crepes.
Farro has a rich, nutty flavor that was much chewier than rice. It cooks in just over 30 minutes and I substituted Farro in place of dishes that called for rice.  We cooked Farro when we had Stir Fry, and when we had Farro/Chicken and Mushrooms. I could easily replace rice all of the time with the Farro because you don’t notice the differences and its healthier for you!!

Porchini wild mushrooms were amazing.  They were dried so you had to plan ahead just a little bit in order to use them. I soaked my Porchini wild mushrooms for about 30 minutes, rinsed them and then chopped them up.  We added them to a chicken, rice and mushroom bake and oh my goodness.  They were delicious, they were much better than canned mushrooms and the taste was amazing.

Wild Mushrooms Morel mushrooms were my absolute favorite in this box of goodies. Morel mushrooms are only around for a few weeks out of the year and throughout the rest of the year you just are out of luck.  But with Melissa’s you can get the Morel mushrooms dried and soak them in water to have Morel’s all year long.  We fried our mushrooms like we would when they are in season and they were a great hit in our house.  Our daughter Liz was so excited that we were having Morel’s out of season that she shouted it from the rooftops.

The Pine Nuts were delicious right out of the bag, but even more delicious when I toasted them lightly.  I used these pine nuts on my salads in place of croutons.  It is much healthier for you and I think that the texture and flavor that was added was an added bonus.

Red Quinoa retained its red color but was fluffy like rice.  The texture and flavor both were delicious and it is also rich in fiber, higher in protein and great edition to any dish.  It is gluten free and has 6 grams of protein which was surprising to me.
