Organic food has became something that I have learned to enjoy eating. So when I was given the chance to work with Melissa’s I jumped at the chance. The box that was delivered was a very big box and I was super excited as I tore into it to see what was delivered.
The red beets we pickled with vinegar, sugar and water which is my husband’s favorite way to eat them. He was pleasantly suprised with the firmness of the beets because they were sealed in a plastic bag. He also enjoyed the Baby Beets right out of the package!! They were nice and firm as well as surprisingly sweet. The beets were a hit with my husband and I tried them but have never enjoyed beets, but these were really good.
The baby potatoes were a big hit with all three of us. The brought us back to fresh out of the garden taste that we have learned to love. The first night we used a little bit of bacon grease, salt, pepper and a little bit of garlic to season them right up. They turned out very soft, delicious, and were very tasty. The other bag we used on a different night and cooked them in butter, salt and pepper wrapped in aluminum foil on the grill. After about 45 minutes they were perfectly tender and ready to be eaten. They were beyond a doubt our favorite items.
Melissa’s Freekah had a rye-like aftertaste that I learned to love. I cooked Freekah in a fried rice dish and loved it. I also used it as a substitute for oatmeal because it has more vitamins, minerals and protein. The only thing that I didn’t like about the Freekah is the amount of time it took to cook it. It took over an hour to cook, so I had to really plan ahead of time to cook it in the morning.
My favorites of the grains that Melissa’s sent me was the Farro. Farro has a rich, nutty flavor that was much chewier than rice. It cooks in just over 30 minutes and I substituted Farro in place of dishes that called for rice. We cooked Farro when we had Stir Fry, and when we had Farro/Chicken and Mushrooms. I could easily replace rice all of the time with the Farro because you don’t notice the differences and its healthier for you!!
Red Quinoa was a surprising grain for me, it retained its red color but was fluffy like rice. The texture and flavor both were delicious and it is also rich in fiber, higher in protein and great edition to any dish. It is gluten free as well but tasted great!! I learned that eating healthier doesn’t mean you are giving up taste, it just means you are getting healthier!! Check out Melissa’s on theirhttp://www.melissas.com, Facebook, and Twitter.
