Homecoming Week as a parent–YIKES!!!

Homecoming week as a parent–YIKES about sums up our week this week.  I wouldn’t trade the memories, the hustle and bustle and the determination of our daughter for anything.  But I know a lot of people think, it is just homecoming so what, but for my daughter it means a lot of first’s.  My husband and I are also going through homecoming week as first timers as well.  We’ve been to homecoming, but never as parents so I’m going to let you in on a little secret…..LOVE every minute of it, and enjoy it because your kids are only Freshmen one time.

We started the Homecoming preparations about 2 weeks ago when our daughter told us she wanted a camouflage dress.  Yes, she is a country girl and very proud of it, but finding a dress in the store isn’t something you can do.  So my mom the jack of all trades came to her granddaughter’s rescue   We bought material, patterns, and the fun began.  We worked on the dress one night at our house and then my mom and daughter spent last weekend putting it together and finishing it.  Making a dress is no easy task, but of course mom rocked it out.  Elizabeth is super happy with the dress and is ready for her first dance (YIKES)!!

Monday after school we had to go and get a denim jacket for her to wear over her dress.  Easy right? Yeah it was really, we went to Orscheln’s Farm and Home Store and of course they had the jacket she wanted.  Followed by trying on lots of fun clothes that were marked down or on clearance and a pair of jeans.  Of course I am one of those “mean” moms, and if you want a pair of jeans that cost that much, you can spend your own money.  She did, so she is the proud owner of her now favorite pair of jeans.

Tuesday morning, get told from the Freshmen she bought the wrong type of jeans and she needs to return them. (Really? What the Heck?!!) Ok, we will try to fit it in sometime this week. Spent time around the house doing the normal homework, picking up, putting up and etc.  Calmest day of the week really, oh how I wish it were still Tuesday!!

First place float!! The picture doesn’t do it justice!! Check out the Smart Fab Trees!

Wednesday was spent doing all kinds of different things.  I did get to blog yesterday, while my husband went to his Dr. appointments.  Then it was time to play taxi, pick up medicines, exchange the jeans, and drop off our daughter so they could work on the float. Then my dad called and needed computer help so he came over and we spent a few hours scanning and uploading old pictures.  Then we used editing software to put names and information on them so we knew who they were.  Finally supper time, poor Mr. SMSL had to figure out Tater Tot Casserole while I helped my dad. Finally at 9 pm we got the call that we could pick up our daughter from working on the float.  They are long way from done, but they did make progress!!

Thursday morning was greeted with a tire that has to be replaced, our daughter needs spray adhesive for the float and I have to make the dreaded trip to town to grab a few things.  So while I shop at Walmart, they will redo the tire and we all know how long that takes!! Then I will hopefully be able to come home and do my “normal” routine before the Homecoming festivities start again. Then pick our daughter up from school,  spend an hour with her, drop her off for a softball game, then back to get her.  Homecoming coronation festivities start at 8 pm followed by a bonfire and then working on the float till 11 pm.

Friday was the Homecoming game and dance until 11:30!! See being a proud parent of a Freshmen isn’t so bad, it just means extra work on your part but it is well worth it in the end.  Lots of  pictures, details and more about Homecoming 2012 as a Freshmen and Parents of a Freshmen!!
